CHRISTY McBRAYER
June 2002

Actor, stand-up comedian, and writer, Christy McBrayer, has taken Hollywood by storm with her down-home humor in the one-woman show, Southern Fried CHICKIE.  The show paints colorful portraits of ten eccentric family members from Christy's hometown, Saltillo, Mississippi, just down the road a piece from Elvis's hometown, Tupelo.  As she chows down on her Mamaw's beloved biscuits and gravy, she reveals that she'd like to break bread with Clark Gable, enjoys purring, and wonders where her lost shoe might be.

If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
That people would be kinder to each other.

Having been a part of his era of AIDS, how has it impacted you?
I had a beautiful cousin who died of AIDS about ten years ago and it impacted our family greatly.  (His grandmother, my Great Aunt Baby, still will not admit that he was gay to this day.) I get an HIV test every year, as do several of my girlfriends.

What are you addicted to?
Everything pleasureable!  The highlights: love, laughter, friendship, good wine, delicious food, champagne, chocolate...none of which I plan to quit!  The one I do plan to quit, when I have children, is cigarettes.

What is your all-time favorite TV sitcom?
There are two:I Love Lucy and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

If you were invisible, what would you like to do?
Keep people from having car accidents.  Gosh, I hate that sound.

If you had a choice to have a dinner date with anyone from history, who would it be?
Clark Gable...and I wouldn't mind if his beautiful, funny wife, Carole Lombard, joins us either.

If you wrote a book today about your life, what would the title be?
Survival of the Not-So-Fittest.

What is something that really bugs you?
Cheap and / or lazy people!

Finish this sentence, "The best thing about today is..."
Everything, because that is all we have.

Christy McBrayer

What is underneath your bed at this moment?
Probably the match to one of the shoes that I have been looking for over the past two weeks.

How has the AIDS epidemic changed the way you think about life and death?
You realize that life is so precious, and it can take beautiful, loving people away from us.  It's not fair.

If you could reincarnate into any animal, what would you be?
I would have never thought this just a year ago because I was always scared of them, but probably a cat in a loving household.  They get to do what all of us wish: eat when they want to eat, drink when they want to drink, sleep when they want to sleep, and get petted and pampered.

What can we do to help during this ongoing HIV/AIDS crisis?
Keep working, loving, thinking, and praying.  Everything else comes from those.

How do you deal with stress?
A hot bubble bath, glass of wine, a sib, some Joni Mitchell, and a prayer.

Whom would you like to be trapped in an elevator with?
Quite honestly, I hope never to be trapped in an elevator!

When you get into bed at night, do you wear pajamas, nightshirt, undies, or nothing at all?
I usually start out in PJs, if you know what I mean...
